The History of Torremolinos is first found on a map from 1748 by Marques of Ensenada; however, it began much earlier than that. It was home to the Phoenicians whose tools have been found dated back from the bronze ag. The Moors invaded Spain from 711-1492 and can still see some of the remnants on the Cuesta del Tajo and the Torre Pimental and also in the Botanical gardens and the Molino de Inca.
Before 1924 Torremolinos was a poor, small fishing village connected to the city of Malaga then it gained its independence, and everything changed over the years.
Let’s not forget the civil war where General Franco started a rebellion which started 17th July 1936-1939 which did affect the population of Torremolinos however it was removed from the history books in the form of ¨Pacto de Olvido¨ The pact to forget all the bad that happened under the dictatorship of general Franco- Watch Netflix documentary ¨The silence of others¨ definitely worth the watch. The Massacre of Pozuelo in Torremolinos and the crimes of the Malaga to Almeria Road now N-340 coastal road.
The birth of tourism and the main beach destination in Spain was born between the 1960´s and 70´s with the influx of tourists, intellectuals, hippies’ artists, aristocrats and celebrities with the likes of Bridget Bardot, Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra which added to the glitz and glam The Tres Torres and The Pez Espada where the hotels to go to and Torremolinos was once the place to be. These people opened the doors today in making Malaga one of Spain busiest airports in Spain with thousands arriving daily.
Torremolinos has now boomed in to one of the busiest tourist destinations in Europe where you can find sun, sea and sand with fresh seafood straight from the Mediterranean Sea and escape the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day life.
